Liberation treatment for CCSVI-MS patients

Dr Paolo Zamboni, an Italian doctor and former vascular surgeon, developed a new treatment for people with MS: 'The Liberation Therapy'. According to this doctor, MS may not be a chronic central nervous system disease, but a vascular disease. After performing successful vascular system treatments in MS patients, he found they had fewer or no acute attacks. Common MS symptoms also decreased significantly and further deterioration was halted.ccsvi_katheter

In addition to the diagnostic investigations used to determine CCSVI, Privatescan also performs the so-called liberation angioplasty treatment as developed by Professor Paolo Zamboni. There are no long waiting lists for CCSVI treatment at Privatescan, and these are performed in the same clinic by doctors with years of experience with this angioplasty treatment.

The Liberation therapy at Privatescan consists of a standard angioplasty, during which a balloon stretches the narrowing in the vein. It is estimated that over 15,000 CCSVI-MS patients worldwide have successfully undergone this treatment since January 2010.

In many cases, results are spectacular, with classic MS symptoms such as spasms, numbness or loss of strength being reduced drastically. For CCSVI-MS patients, this may represent an enormous improvement in quality of life.

90 days after treatment, a check-up can be performed via a new echo / doppler.

Your day(s) of treatment will look like this:

CCSVI Liberation angioplasty

    • Discussion beforehand with treating doctor.
    • Liberation Angioplasty. (Removing a stenosis in 1 or more veins under mild sedation. Treatment of both jugular and azygos veins, if necessary.)
    • Use of high pressure balloons to prevent restenosis is possible.
    • Your treatment will be performed by a vascular surgeon. In many other centres, treatment is performed by a cardiologist or interventional radiologist who are experienced in treating arteries but have no specific experience treating veins. Compared with arteries, veins require a specific, often different treatment strategy
    • Stay for follow-up and recovery.
    • Post-intervention discussion with the doctor. Written treatment report follows within about 2 working weeks.
    • Discharge 4 to 6 hours after treatment and approval from your treating doctor.

Optional CCSVI Echo / Doppler Duplex check-up after 90 days

    • Discussion with treating doctor.

    • Echo / Doppler Duplex. The goal is to determine whether stenosis are still absent in the treated vein(s) after 90 days, and no so-called restenosis has occurred. After this period, the odds of a stenosis returning are significantly reduced. In part thanks to the unique use of so-called "High Pressure" balloons, a treatment applied specifically in clinics Privatescan works with, restenosis (return of an already treated stenosis) has been reduced to almost 0 cases. Using conventional balloons, as is the case elsewhere in the world, this has been found to occur in about 35% of treatments.

    • Follow-up discussion with treating CCSVI doctor.

CCSVI Liberation angioplasty costs and remuneration

    CCSVI investigations (venography and doppler):

    €   975,-

    CCSVI angioplasty treatment, without screening:

    € 3900,-

CCSVI angioplasty treatment and screening in 2 days:

    € 4600,-

During this treatment, all stenosis identified and any other treatable problems will be treated with normal balloons in a single session. In order to minimise the risk of a so-called restenosis and the associated risk of relapse compared to the use of normal balloons, you can choose to have the doctor use so-called High Pressure balloons. A surcharge applies.

Who qualifies for CCSVI Liberation therapy

If the diagnosis CCSVI has already been made, you may qualify for Liberation angioplasty treatment. If the diagnosis was made during your investigations into CCSVI with Privatescan, the options will be explained to you on the same day. This is also the case if the diagnosis CCSVI was made in a clinic other than Privatescan. In case of the latter, you will need to provide:

      • A CD ROM or DVD with the MRI (venography) images (at most 3 months old)

      • A CD ROM or DVD with a paper print-out of your Echo / Doppler examination (at most 3 months old)
      • A written report in English, German or Dutch of your investigation(s) describing the diagnosis.

You can send, e-mail or fax your copies of images, written reports and personal details to Privatescan. Privatescan will submit your data to its doctor(s) for review. The doctor(s) will subsequently draft a written treatment recommendation if treatment is necessary and/or possible. Privatescan will send this to you and if necessary provide comments by telephone. If you wish, you may then make an appointment for your Liberation angioplasty treatment with Privatescan. You can do this via our appointment form..>> or  by telephone via telephone number +31 (0)74 - 2552 680.

Privatescan has no waiting lists for treating CCSVI in MS

The Privatescan doctors perform thousands of angioplasties each year in artery and vein systems. The Privatescan clinics are all equipped with state of the art treatment rooms and equipment, and work with a large team of doctors and medical support staff. In addition, the clinics meet the most stringent quality requirements for hospitals. Furthermore, a Dutch-speaking Privatescan representative will be present at all times for support during your treatment and/or investigations. This not only ensures a personalised approach, but also allows Privatescan to perform treatment within one to two weeks of making an appointment.

Who does not qualify for Liberation angioplasty treatment?

As is the case for any intervention or treatment, there may be reasons why you do not qualify for treatment. This may be the case if:

      • The stenosis is in a dangerous or unreachable place in your veins.

      • The stenosis is too mild and does not (yet) cause flow problems or reflux (backflow) of blood.

      • You have a medical condition or disease that makes treatment impossible or risky.

      • You are allergic to certain medicines or contrast agents.

If you wish, your Privatescan coordinator can inform you about whether or not you qualify for an angioplasty by telephone.
